"Included in this volume are well over six hundred photos, which reflect, from various angles, all aspects of Beijing in the hundred years from the later period of the Qing Dynasty to early 1940s, as well as the storm and stress it had witnessed in those years.
Thanks to the hard work of the photographers and collectors, the reader is able to see from this album Beijing's places of scenic and historic interest, the local customs, the ruins of the Yuanmingyuan Park reduced to ashes by the Anglo-French forces in 1860, and the traces left by the War of Resistance Against Japan that started in Lugouqiao on July 7, 1937. When he compares all this with the realities, the reader can also sense the great changes that have taken place in Beijing since China started its policy of reform and opening to the outside world." (from preface dated September 1991).
