"On April 7, 1927, the Paris Opera house hosted the triumphant premiere of Abel Gance's "Napoleon," in its short version (the original lasted 7 hours!). Six months later, "The Jazz Singer" marked the debut of the talking picture, thus consigning Gance's innovations and his "Napoleon" to the dustbin of cinematic history.
A fervent admirer of Napoleon since adolescence, the great film historian Kevin Brownlow has devoted his life to resurrecting this legendary film and restoring "the" version, the authentic one, the only one faithful to the poetic and brilliant megalomania of this extraordinary project by a "possessed" filmmaker. This quest has taken him from one end of the planet to the other in search of previously unpublished information.
His extraordinary knowledge of the film and its history allows him to bring the making of the film to life day after day, providing us with a masterful portrait of Abel Gance and his work. This lavishly illustrated book, retracing this epic journey, pays unparalleled homage to one of cinema's masterpieces and one of the masters of the seventh art.

Kevin Brownlow began collecting films at the age of 10. He successively became an editor, fiction director, producer, and documentary filmmaker, all while continuing his work as a film historian and film restorer. He received an Honorary Oscar in November 2010 for his lifetime of work as a historian and restorer."
